Romance
by Susana
Navalón
Translated by Yasha
Maccanico
(Latin origin, the name given to the peoples and languages that
are related to Rome. Afterwards, the name was used to refer to texts
in this language, especially those composed in verse or prose).
It is also known as corrido gitano, for the way in which it is sung,
without any breaks. It is, quite simply, Castillian romance as it
was assimilated by the gypsies, and converted into flamenco. It
may be the most primitive style, and at present it is rare for this
style of song to be performed. The tonás are derived from the romance. |

Mairena gave them a festive tone that can be danced to following
the meter of the soleá por bulerías.
|
| Dance |
There was no dancing in
the primitive versions of the romance. Later, Antonio
Mairena gave them a festive tone that can be danced
to following the meter of the soleá por bulerías. The
meter can be marked in two different ways:

78 910
1112
Or also:

| Although the romance is usually
sung without accompaniment (a capella), it experienced
a musical transformation in its performance – which was
not frequent – by flamenco cantaores, as it was adapted
to allow for guitar accompaniment. It tends to acquire
the same rhythm as the soleá por bulerías, which has a
somewhat quicker rhythm than the one that is customary
for soleares. The guitar accompaniment is executed at
the top:

| Singing |
It is a flamenco singing
style that is also known as “corrido” or “corrida” due
to the way in which it is sung, without pauses and with
a single-rhyme structure, without guitar accompaniment.
It is a monotone form of singing, which is composed
of few notes and is executed with few changes of tone
in the voice. It is the ancestor of tonás, deblas, carceleras
and martinetes. Depending on the subject that is developed
in its lyrics, its theme can be romantic, about chivalry
or Moorish. As a flamenco form, it was ignored by flamencologists
and did not gain its stature until 1960, as it was a
little known and not frequently studied subject. This
form was developed by El Planeta, El Tío Rivas, Moroncillo
and the gypsy Chiclanita.
