Antonio Quintero, a famous member of the golden triumvirate of the copla (a genre of traditional Spanish popular singing) composed by Quintero, León y Quiroga, obtained his first success in theatres with La Copla Andaluza (The Andalusian Copla), whose premiere performance was staged in 1928 by Angelillo and El Niño de Marchena. The re-staging of this show, which took place in 1952 and featured Rafael Farina, was a further resounding success, that was brought to cinema screens in 1959. A luxury cast of singers, musicians and dancers enriched this faithful transposition of the comic sketches writted by Quintero and Pascual Guillén, which revolve around Mariquilla's unrequited love for Gabriel. After injuring Pepe Luis, the brother of the young girl who is in love with him, Gabriel seeks refuge in a gypsy camp in order to flee from justice.
