"To make this record, which has represented something like a miracle in New York for me, we picked twelve great boleros that appear as though they make up a single song. Four seasons, twelve months, twelve beats like in blues and the soleá, twelve hours of the hands of the clock of Romance", Martirio writes in the sleevenotes of her new album.
"Spring in New York" marks the return of an artist who, from her beginnings 20 years ago, broke moulds through her manner of singing and her peculiar image. Martirio, the great heterodox pioneer in the fusion of different musical genres and styles, comes back under the guidance of Nat Chediak and Fernando Trueba, with an album that was recorded in New York with musicians who are hugely prestigious in the world of jazz: Kenny Drew Jr. on piano, George Mraz on the double-bass and Dafnis Prieto on drums. Alongside them, Paquito D'Rivera (clarinet), Claudio Roditi (trumpet) and Houston Person (sax) also take part.
