In the first programme (Otros rumbos del cante, 1980), it is possible to see a couple that has become historic, which has experienced several peaks and troughs, and which was at its height at the time, when they attracted a sizeable young audience to flamenco. We are talking about Lole y Manuel, who, if we look at them with twenty years' hindsight, considering what has come after them, were fully within flamenco tradition. In fact, Manuel notes that although they are gypsies without prejudices and lovers of other musical genres, they can only truly feel flamenco. Lole sings alegrías, bulerías, some of her own songs and ballads, and some magnificent bulerías por soleá.
The second programme is devoted to El Pali, who is one of the most highly valued performers of sevillanas and fandangos de Huelva, among other styles that are known as 'aflamencados' (lit. 'flamencoised', that is, genres that experienced changes as a result of the influence of flamenco). It is a pleasure to listen to his somewhat operatic voice and his nostalgic comments, his participation in typical Sevillian feasts and his views. With Seville in the background. The recording belongs to 'Rito y geografía del cante' (The rituals and geography of flamenco singing), from 1971-72.
The following programme (De Huelva a Sevilla, 1980) can be considered a continuation of the previous one. This second part is dedicated to El Pali as well, although he is a little older, and he sings sevillanas por seguidiyas flamencas. In the first part, a performer and researcher of the fandangos de Huelva, Antonio González, the author of 'Historia del fandango en la provincia de Huelva', is featured singing and talking.
The DVD is finished off by Los del Río, at a time when they could never have imagined that many years later they would achieve worldwide notoriety with 'Macarena'. They perform a varied selection of sevillanas, rumbas and sevillanas rocieras.
