Martirio is the character created by Isabel Quiñones (Huelva, 1954) in the mid-eighties, after being a member of the protest folk group Jarcha. Beneath the sophisticated nature of the character, with ornamental combs, costumes, and sunglasses, we find some direct, naïve and innovative songs, that renew the stagnant genre of the copla (poetic composition, in verse, used as lyrics). This compilation includes songs from her early period, her evolution towards intimate, late-night versions of traditional coplas with the Chano Domínguez jazz trio, and the turn towards popular South American music in her latest releases.
