Partituras "Algo que decir" Vol. 3 (Musical scores, "Something to say", Vol. 3)
Content: 1 book
Year of publication: 2006

Text: A4 Format
184 Pages
In a bilingual English/Spanish edition, the musical score is included in standard notation and tablature, featuring all of the fingerwork for both hands.

The third instalment of the transcription of the musical scores of the record “Algo que Decir ”, by José Jimenez "El Viejín". It is the first published work by the founder of the sophisticated and mysterious Caño Roto guitar style.

Enrique Vargas is the author of the texts and of the transcription, which is the only one that has been approved by the artist himself.

The work is divided into three volumes, due to the magnitude of the musical text, and to the amount of explanations about the palos (flamenco forms) and analysis of the falsetas (melodic phrases interspersed between successions of chords) that accompany each musical score.

Likewise, the parts during which more than one guitar is playing have been meticulously transcribed.

In the chapters “history of the palo and advice” the tuning that is employed in each of the pieces is explained in detail, as are the harmonic scales and turns that are characteristic of flamenco for each of the tonalities that are used. Moreover, two aspects that have been rarely examined in flamenco literature are looked at, which are indispensable to maintain the integrity of the meter: patterns for rhythmic hand-clapping and the marking of the meter using one’s feet.

In the analysis section, there are explanations, falseta after falseta, of the techniques and manner of interpreting a palo that are distinctive of El Viejín’s style.

This third part contains:

- The Soleá por bulería “Caño Roto”, recorded in the modern Re# Hijaz tonality, with a very interesting accompaniment for flamenco singing that is entirely transcribed.

- The Sevillanas “Cuatros”, a duet with the bass player Carles Benavent which is full of virtuoso playing.

- The Minera “A mi hijo Jonatán”, a piece that is included in this record but was recorded years earlier, and which served as a launchpad for Viejín to attain fame, due to its extreme beauty and the interpretative quality that it features.

Bravo!
Bravo! These transcription books are worth their weight in gold ! for several reasons: 1. El Viejin’s style and compositions are on the cutting edge of the new generation of Flamenco guitarists. “Algo que decir” is a landmark recording. 2. the transcriptions are incredibly accurate, including El Viejin’s unique right and left hand fingering. Tablature is included to reinforce standard notation. 3. the background information (both in Spanish and English) on the palos (forms), foot tapping, compas, historical relevance and harmonic structure is priceless. These added details dramatically raise the standard of Flamenco transcription books. 4. The music is transcribed by one of those rare musicians who deeply understands the idiom (Flamenco) AND can explain it technically and concisely.
