The dream of Juan Gallardo (Christopher Rydell) has always been that of being a bullfighter, even though his father, a banderillero (in a bullfight, the man who sticks banderillas, or long multi-coloured barbed darts, into the bull's neck), died in a bullring. For this reason, he often runs away and smuggles himself into estates to bullfight. One night, the guards of an estate discover him and give him a beating. That is where he gets to know Doña Sol (Sharon Stone), the young, rich and despotic owner of the estate. First, she flirts with him, and then she snubs him. Juan decides to go to Jerez to learn to bullfight, and he will only return once he has been successful in the bullrings.
