Peineta (ornamental comb) with decorative fretwork. It is made of celluloid, imitating tortoise-shell, the material that they used to be made of traditionally, which was extracted from the shell of the hawksbill turtle, which is currently at risk of extinction.
Measurements: height 17 cm x width 23 cm.
The peineta (ornamental comb) is the main complementary accessory of the mantilla(a variation of the veil worn by women over theit head on special occasions, particularly religious feasts) to stylise the shape of the face. It started being used in the 19th century, but it continues to adorn Spanish women on great occasions such as religious weddings, the Semana Santa (Easter Week celebrations) and bullfights.
As for their size, we must choose one that is suited to our height, and that of our partners, if we are accompanied. Women who are short can opt for a high peineta, although it is harder to wear. Tall women, and those with a long face, can wear a lower peineta, which is a lot more comfortable.
