Salomé was a young woman who asked for the head of Saint John the Baptist out of spite. Carlos Saura re-creates this biblical tale and returns to his early films which, in reality, are musical portraits: “Bodas de Sangre” (1981), “Carmen” (1983) and “El amor brujo” (1986). Aída Gómez, the director of the Ballet Nacional de España (Spanish National Ballet) between 1998 and 2001, designed the choreography and embodies Salomé herself. Her dancing is given the task of narrating the story of this ambitious young woman.

The music for “Salomé” is composed by Roque Baños with the special cooperation of Tomatito, and it is based on ancient forms of music that influenced the development of flamenco. The film, which was given a great international reception, was awarded the prize for the “Best Artistic Contribution” at the Montreal Festival in 2002.
