Multi-zone DVD compatible with all countries (NTSC and PAL)
The first programme is devoted to the Valencian Juan Varea, who reminds viewers that he came to perform alongside legendary cantaores (flamenco singers) like Manuel Vallejo, Juanito Mojama and La Niña de los Peines. Accompanied by Luis Habichuela, he sings a series of personal malagueñas with a theme by Chacón, finished off by verdiales. He then sings soleá and fandangos.
The second programme, entitled 'Tercio y tacón' is dedicated to Calixto Sánchez, the current director of the Andalusian Flamenco Centre in Jerez; a school teacher, a man of culture, who has given conferences, and a cantaor with great qualities. He had just won (in 1980) the 1st Biennial of Flamenco Art in Seville. Accompanied by Juan Habichuela, he sings tientos-tangos, malagueña and fandangos.
The third programme, 'Aire de los Gabrieles', is dedicated to Naranjito de Triana, with Manolo Barón playing guitar. At the time, the cantaor from Triana (a neighbourhood in Seville with strong links to flamenco) had already been singing for 38 years. He interprets a soleá de Triana, the soleá de los Alfareros, followed by a polo, to highlight the similarities between the two forms. He then sings an old and forgotten petenera that he himself retrieved from slate records; he also performs fandangos del Gloria.
Finally, as tends to be customary, the DVD ends with one of the television programmes from 1964, which is dedicated to flamenco Christmas (Coplas de Nochebuena); it is a blend in which flamenco and popular music come together: villancicos (Christmas carols) de Triana; villancicos por tanguillos; villancicos por fandangos de Huelva with the voice and guitar of Pepe de Algeciras and Paco de Lucía. Also, the Three Kings' verdiales by Bernardo el de los Lobitos, martinetes de la Degollación and serranas of the Exodus to Egypt, with the voices of Pepe El Culata and Juan Varea. Songs that are as popular as 'Los peces en el río' or 'Ya vienen los Reyes', and the San lorenzo de Córdoba parish rondaña are also featured.
