A timeless story of love and falling out of love. Carmen, Carlos Saura's second musical that was made with Antonio Gades, is inspired by Georges Bizet's opera. It is an adaptation of the piece to the world of flamenco, that tells the story of Antonio, the director of a dance company who is working on the staging of Bizet's Carmen. When he finds the ideal protagonist, he begins an obsessive relationship with her that reproduces the libretto of the opera. It received the award for the best artistic contribution at the Cannes Festival, and was nominated for an Oscar in 1984.

impactante

A revelation
I saw this film in London in the Eighties. I was completely captivated by the dancing. More than any other influence it was this film that triggered my enduring love for flamenco. The device of protraying a dance company performing Carmen and the subsequent blurring of the lives and the roles of the actors gives the story a freshness for those already familiar with Bizet's work.
Gades' gift was his ability to choreograph for a whole company, so for me the fight in the cigarette factory is one of the most brutally powerful pieces of dance I have ever experienced.
With such a powerful cast it is difficult to individual but Cristina Hoyos is not surprisingly superb, and Paco de Lucia (with hair!) plays with a casual elegance, grace and humility that is endearing. Gades himself always had a fragile vulnerability on screen that was charming.
His death was a tragedy for his family and all who loved him, but his films will remain as a consolation and inspiration.
