'The first steps in the theatre' describes the beginnings of flamenco in theatres, and the activities that were staged by the great companies in the first half of the twentieth century: It features photographs of Antonia Mercé and Vicente Escudero, who subsequently dances in an alegrías style and shows viewers his facet as a painter; Alejandro Vega performs a petenera; Marienma talks about Spanish dancing and dances her version of 'El Amor Brujo' by Falla; and Fernanda Romero recalls Carmen Amaya, and her peculiar wardrobe, as she dances tarantos.

In the second part, entitled 'Renewal of the old tree', the young bailaor Joselito, from the Biencasaos family, performs bulerías, and the extremely young bailaora Isabel López dances soleá and bulerías.

The DVD finishes with 'El Baile hoy - 1980' (Dancing today - 1980) drawn from the series 'Flamenco (Ayer y Hoy)' (Flamenco (Past and Present)), which is part of the theatre show 'Ay, Jondo'. The choreographer Mario Maya offers us an outline, with Concha Vargas accompanying him.
