Jerez Gitano (1980) - La fragua (Gypsy Jerez (1980) - The forge)
Content: 1 DVD
Year of publication: 2003

Lenght: 85 minutes
Multi-zone DVD compatible with all countries (NTSC and PAL)

The first programme (El bronce añejo, 1980) features the Sordera family, with almost all its members present. The then patriarch, Manuel Soto 'Sordera', sings and his sons José, Enrique and Manuel act as tocaores (flamenco guitarists) and palmeros (rhytmic hand-clappers). Manuel Morao the younger, that is, the exceptional guitarist that we will later come to know as Moraíto Chico, takes part as a tocaor. The surprise is the appearance of an extremely young José Mercé, El Sordera's nephew, who was then a member of the company of the bailaor El Güito, and is introduced in the programme as a bailaor and cantaor. Here, he limits himself to accompanying his uncle with his rhythmic hand-clapping. We also hear the great Jerez cantaor Manuel Sordera, who has retired, singing siguiriyas, bulerías por soleá and bulerías.

In the second programme (Jerez Gitano, 1980), we see a very important gathering in Jerez, in which none other than Fernando Terremoto himself takes part, possibly in the latest images of him that have been preserved. It is pure Jerez: 'El Mono' sings and dances bulerías very gracefully; Fernando Gálvez sings bulerías por soleá; María Vargas, tangos; 'Diamante', with a powerful voice, martinete, and Terremoto sings siguiriyas with plenty of 'duende' (a spirit, representing inspiration or a trance-like condition that has to do with the delivery or expression of flamenco). The programme is finished off by a collective feast in a bulerías style.

The third programme belongs to the 1964 series 'Flamenco. Antología del Cante y Baile Andaluces' (Flamenco. An anthology of Andalusian Singing and Dancing). It is dedicated to 'The Forge', with theatrical touches in which we can see, for example, Chato de la Isla portrayed as an old blacksmith. The programme tackles the martinetes, tonás, livianas and carceleras. Paco de Lucía's guitar can be occasionally heard in the background. And Antonio Montoya, the great Sernita, Miguel de la Dolores and Chato de la Isla are featured, singing.
