For the third year, Arahal (Seville) is celebrating the 'Al Gurugú' festival in memory of La Niña de los Peines, whose maternal roots are in this village, where the only flamenco peña (enthusiasts' club) bearing her name is found. Miguel Poveda, El Lebrijano and Esperanza Fernández are part of the line-up for this year's edition of the festival, which is completed by numerous complementary activities during this flamenco week.
The festival starts up on 21 June with the painting and photograph exhibition entitled 'Tres visiones del flamenco' (Three Visions of Flamenco), by the painter Patricio Hidalgo and the photographers Pepe Lamarca and Fidel Meneses. The programme continues on Tuesday 22 June, with the showing of the documentary 'El último viaje de la Paquera a Japón' (La Paquera's last trip to Japan), in memory of another great cantaora (flamenco singer) who died this year.
On Wednesday 23, in the Teatro Cervantes at 21.30, there will be a flamenco play: 'Las mil y una historias de Pericón de Cádiz' (Pericón de Cádiz’s one thousand and one stories), a comic-dramatic monologue by José Luis Ortiz Nuevo, in which he recounts the life of this unique artist.
On the Thursday, Fernando González Caballos will give a conference on guitar playing, which will be illustrated by the Jerez guitarist Juan Diego. A round table dedicated to one of the great guitar masters, Niño Ricardo, whose centenary is celebrated this year, is scheduled for Friday 25. Afterwards, the event will move to the Plaza del Cristo, to enjoy the singing of Esperanza Fernández, with Miguel Ángel Cortés on guitar, and of Juan Peña El Lebrijano, accompanied by Paco Peña on guitar, and by two palmeros (rhythmic hand clappers).
On Saturday 26, a bronze bust of La Niña de los Peines crafted by the sculptor Jesús Gavira will be unveiled. A plaque and a decorative tile will also be placed in the Casino, where Pepe Pinto used to work and where he met his wife-to-be Pastora Pavón, and in the calle Juan Pérez, where the Pavón Cruz family resided, and where the Niña de los Peines' eldest brother, Arturo Pavón, was born. Afterwards, the 'Verde que te quiero verde' award will be presented to the tireless poet and creator José Luis Ortiz Nuevo. This night's performances will be by Miguel Poveda, accompanied by Juan Gómez 'Chicuelo', and the dancing of Israel Galván, accompanied by his dance company.
