 Antonio Núñez Montoya, "El Chocolate"
|
"El Chocolate", Antonio Núñez Montoya, died on 19 July in his house in Seville. The cantaor (flamenco singer) is considered one of the wise men of the "cante jondo" (lit. "deep singing", an expression used to refer to the deepest and more solemn forms of flamenco singing) and had one of the most personal and reputable voices in flamenco singing. "El Chocolate", a well-respected singer of seguiriyas, soleares, tarantos de Manuel Torre and his own personal fandangos -although he was also a worthy singer of other palos-, learned to sing with some great teachers, ranging from Tomás Pavón and Manuel Vallejo to Manolo Caracol. His artistic career and artistry were recognised with the 2nd Giraldillo del Cante award. In 2003, he was awarded the Medalla de Andalucía (Medal of Andalusia).
