The Cordoban cantaor "Fosforito" has earned the fifth Llave de Oro del Cante (Golden Key of Flamenco Singing). The award, which will be presented to him in September, acknowledges his work to dignify and universalise flamenco, after several instances when he had been the leading candidate for the prize.
The Andalusian government has decided to award the Llave de Oro del Cante to Antonio Fernández Díaz, better known as "Fosforito". Among the achievements that have made him worthy of the award, the ones that stand out are his work to dignify and make flamenco universal, the re-vitalising of styles that were no longer in use, the significance of his creative contributions and an absolute mastery of all the styles.
The presentation ceremony will take place in the month of September, during the "Málaga en Flamenco" festival. In fact, Málaga is the city in which the maestro and cantaor (flamenco singer) has been living for over 50 years.
This Llave del Cante adds to other awards that "Fosforito" has already received, like the National Prize of the Faculty of Flamencology in Jerez de la Frontera, the Compás del Cante and the Pastora Pavón "Niña de los Peines" Prize.
The history of the Llave del CanteIncluding this latest Golden Key that will be awarded to Fosforito, a total of five have been presented since this award was created. Its previous winners were Tomás "El Nitri", Manuel Vallejo, Antonio Mairena and Camarón de la Isla.
This historic award was first established in the nineteenth century by a group of enthusiasts from Málaga, and was later registered by the Culture Council of the Andalusian Junta (government of a region, or autonomous community) in 1984. The first Golden Key for Flamenco Singing was posthumously awarded to Camarón de la Isla in 2000.
