A cult bar in which professionals and enthusiasts of this art form meet up. It has a reserved section in which flamenco sessions are held almost every day, and where it is not uncommon for one, or a few, impromptu artists to set off singing, playing or dancing. It is pure flamenco in an authentic environment.

: C/ Echegaray, 15
Telephone: 91.369.07.57
Opening times: From 21 to 3.30.
Metro: Sevilla (Line 2) Antón Martín (Line 1)

In the most flamenco street of the Barrio de las Letras (District of Humanities), it is a cocktail bar with New York decoration, although it has a flamenco soul. The interesting thing about it is that it was not born as a flamenco establishment, but rather that its clientele and atmosphere have been turning it progressively more flamenco-minded as time goes on, making it a compulsory stop for a night of duende. There are performances on Wednesdays and Sundays. Entrance is free, and drinks do not carry an extra charge. When there isn´t a perfomance, disc-jockeys play styles that have plenty of rhythm: tangos, rumbas, bulerías... which people dance to, especially at the back of the bar. It is also often possible to hear the “posh” gypsies from El Rastro clapping their palms rhythmically. It is attended by plenty of customers.

A corner of the Alhambra in the area of the Rastro in Madrid. During the day, it is a picturesque place in which to eat, or to have an appetizer listening to good music. Just before midnight, after supper, it transforms into a cocktail bar with lots of duende and live performances from Wednesday through to Saturday. Flamenco is the predominant style although there are a range of styles on offer: live jazz, singer-songwriters, belly-dancing, tango ...

Telephone: 91.420.21.84
Opening Times: From 19 to 3.
Metro: Sevilla (Line 2) Antón Martín (Line 1)

Situated in the Huertas area, it is a cocktail bar that is frequented by “cantaores”, bull-fighters, gypsies of pure stock, and a few tourists who are eager to experience new sensations. Andalusian tiles, Arabic arches and photographs of bull-fighting celebrities make up the decoration of this establishment in which it is possible to listen to the best of the most recent “new flamenco”. As for dancing, this is more difficult, because although it has two floors, it is small and fills to bursting point. What normally happens is that people have a first drink here before moving on to Cardamomo, which is only a few numbers up the road.

EL CALLEJÓN DE MADRID
Addres: C/ Manuel Fernández y González, 5
Telephone: 91.429.83.97
Opening times: From 19.30 to 2.30. Fri & Sat from 19.30 to 3.30.
Metro: Sevilla (Line 2) Sol (Line 1, 2 y 3)

Between Plaza de Santa Ana and calle Echegaray, there is a small alley that is brimming with bars. It is to this alley that this establishment for tapas and aperitifs, which becomes a cocktail bar with plenty of atmosphere at night, in which to hear the latest in flamenco, owes its name. Decorated with photographs of flamenco artists, it is a small and welcoming place in which to taste a fine wine, which is always served with a tapa, or to try its mojitos and caipirinhas. With a little luck, it is possible to get a table on the terraza (outdoor space with tables), and to enjoy the atmosphere of the crowded alley from the front row.

EL JARAIZ
Address: C/ Echegaray, 12
Telephone: 91.369.48.10
Metro: Sevilla (Line 2)

ESPAÑA CAÑÍ
Address: Plaza del Ángel, 14
Opening times: Mon-Thu from 12 to 2. Fri & Sat from 12 to 3.
Metro: Sol (Lines 1, 2 and 3) Tirso de Molina (Line 1)

A typical tavern that is famous for the tiling on its front, which was once featured in a press advertisement. It is a relaxed place in which to enjoy a wine or a beer, and to chat listening to flamenco, a good place in which to arrange to meet up before going out for drinks. The tapas are nothing special and not very varied, so if people are hungry it would be best to have a bite elsewhere.

On Tuesdays there is live flamenco and there are also auditions for new up-and-coming artists. Tourists and celebrities occasionally drop in. There is a good atmosphere, cocktails and tapas, in one of the liveliest areas in the capital.

SEVILLANAS

AL ANDALUS
Address: C/ Capitán Haya, 19
Telephone: 91.556.14.39
Opening times: From 22 to 5.30. Closed: Sunday
Metro: Cuzco (Line 10)

One of the few establishments that survived the boom that sevillanas experienced in Madrid around the mid-eighties, a period during which knowing how to dance sevillanas meant being fashionable, and there was a proliferation of academies and sevillanas dance halls. Al Andalus has been able to keep its clientele from that period and is now one of the capital´s classic spots. It offers good performances and, at times, it is possible to see some well-known figures there. Sevillanas are playing through the night, alongside a few rumbas for the less exceptional dancers. The hall is large, the dance floor is usually organised, and there is a selection of cold tapas to accompany the fino (dry) and manzanilla sherries. It is somewhat expensive, but is worth it, if the flamenco company is good. Daily performances start at 22.30 and go on until 1. a 1 h.

ALMONTE
Address: C/ Juan Bravo, 35
Telephone: 91.563.25.04
Opening times: From 21 to 5. Fri & Sat until 6
Metro: Núñez de Balboa (Lines 5 and 9)

The youngest sevillanas dance hall in the capital. Sevillanas, rumbas and even salsa tunes are played to keep everyone dancing until the early hours of the morning, although the music is commercial. It is difficult to get a table on the bottom floor, which is usually where the standard of the dancing is best. If you aren´t a regular customer, it is normal to be sent upstairs, which turns out to be rather stressful and chaotic. However, it is always possible to go to stand at the bar. Generally, the dance floors are full and there is not much space in which to dance, but it is perfect to switch dancing partners and to get to meet people. It offers good prices, good quality tapas and lots of fun in the middle of the Salamanca district.

AXARQUÍA
Address: C/ Calatrava, 32
Telephone: 91.366.66.03
Opening times: From 21.30 to the morning
Metro: La Latina (Line 5)

A flamenco establishment with tradition, reputation and home-cooking. It is possible to sample all kinds of tapas and dishes, and daily menus are served in the dining hall. The ham is excellent and the house specialty is the rabo de toro (bull´s tail). The tablao is adjacent to the restaurant and among others, great flamenco artists like Camarón de la Isla, Remedios Amaya, José Menese and Niña Pastori have performed there. Some tables have a poor view but, nonetheless, the atmosphere is intimate and welcoming. It is not unusual to see celebrities there. There are performances every day and it is ideal for groups and business lunches. Furthermore, it is not very expensive, at between € 25 and € 30 per performance.

Located on the same plot as a famous early seventeenth-century comedy theatre, in 1971 it began its trajectory as a flamenco tablao. Its ample hall, and its stage, which is set into a frame of large wooden beams that give it character and personality, are what set it aside from the rest. Rocío Jurado, José Mercé, Lola Flores, Chiquete and La Paquera de Jerez have all got up onto its stage. Furthermore, it has a flamenco company that performs on a daily basis. A number of celebrities have been there, including Queen, Pierce Brosnan, Shirley McLaine, Jean Claude Van Damme ...
